🌟 MEET NATHAN OUR CLINICAL COORDINATOR - ABORIGINAL HEALTH PRACTITIONER 🌟
🌈 What does working at Illawarra AMS mean to you?
As a Noongar and Wilyakali man, I’m proud to be working as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner and Clinical Coordinator at the Illawarra AMS. We have a great team at the AMS, and there is nothing more rewarding than working with my people and supporting the community.
🤝 What advice would you give mob about looking after their health?
The advice I would give is that you’re never too young or too old to start living a healthier life. Start exercising, make healthier food choices, and try to limit drinking and smoking. Book in at the AMS for your yearly health check and regular check-ups with the GP, and take that first step on your health journey.
🫶🏾 Who or what inspires you in your career?
My grandparents, parents, and siblings inspire me to keep paving the way for our people, working hard and always doing your best. I love being around mob from all over. Growing up and working in Broken Hill and Far West communities, as well as across the Illawarra and South Coast, has been an incredible experience. Listening to, respecting, and learning from Elders and community members has been unreal, and it keeps me going. It makes me proud to be Aboriginal. ... See MoreSee Less

🌟 MEET DR. JOE HOCKEY 🌟
🌈 What does working at Illawarra AMS mean to you?
Working at the AMS is a real privilege. In my role as a GP, it means that I get the chance to sit down with some of the most in-need people in our community, be trusted with their story, and see what we can do to help. It’s really tough at times, but not many jobs give you an opportunity to try and help others as often as this job.
🤝 What advice would you give Mob about looking after their health?
The advice I would give is just to start now – don’t put it off! Start eating well today, go for that walk this arvo, take your medication, see the GP, quit smoking. Whatever it is, just get started on looking after yourself so that you can be around for your family and friends.
❤️ Who or what inspires you in your career?
The thing that inspires me and keeps me going at work, is the firm belief that everyone, absolutely everyone, is deserving of love and care. It might be really difficult to show love and care sometimes, and it might not always look like what patients want it to look like, but everyone is deserving of it. That keeps me turning up.
We appreciate Dr. Hockeys care and dedication he brings to our community 💫 ... See MoreSee Less
